Glamour Controversy. Get ready to hate me.

Photobucket[WARNING: extremely large rant. read at your own risk; for any new readers- this post is out of the norm. GO back into my other stuff and it's less controversial.]

First let me start off by saying that I am going to word this post very carefully. I can probably guess that the majority who read this article will probably either hate me after I write it, or say something along the lines of me “not knowing what it feels like”. I’m going to try to write this as objectively as possible, I do have an opinion and I am going to take the time to express it. I’m fairly sure that no matter how well I craft this, people will hear only what they want to hear. Read this with an open mind. If you wrap your head around the big picture I’m about to get into, you may not hate me so much. [PS- since I know my friends are reading this, you don't apply. I love your teasing because I love you. This is directed towards the various comments from this article] Personally, I don’t really care who judges me from what I am writing here- my friends have all heard me say how irritating it is when other people mention something about my weight. I am completely loving of my body- I LIKE being tiny- but it’s practically beating a dead horse when I meet new people and they make mention of “OHH! you’re so cute and TINY! Let’s go out to dinner- you need it!”. REALLY? cause I can’t feed myself? I wasn’t aware that my fully stocked kitchen and pantry was going to waste and not being eaten by me. Last I knew, I was eating breakfast lunch and dinner. So sorry if you feel the need to feed me to try and make me gain weight. It’s a lost cause.

So before we get into my highly opinionated rant.. let me just start by saying- not all skinny people are healthy, and not all overweight people are unhealthy. Vice versa. I am ALSO aware that there are certain extreme conditions that prevent people from losing weight. This is not directed towards them- any kind of medical issue is nothing to poke fun at. I am aiming this towards people who have nothing standing in the way of their health. So let it begin…

You can find the article on here, from glamour.com

This image above has stirred up a lot of controversy lately, and rightfully so. Lizzie Miller is an extremely beautiful “plus size” model that has graced the inside of Glamour’s September issue. She literally oozes confidence in this photograph, even though she was a little uncomfortable putting herself out there for everyone to see. Photographs like this empower women to have confidence and feel amazing in their natural skin. BUT…

With every up, there is a down.

After seeing this published, I’m now reading articles everywhere about people saying “It’s great to see a REAL woman in this magazine!” as well as people stating that reality TV shows are being based on “normal” sized woman now FINALLY, stating that they are sick of the “skinny reality b*tches.” So what is being implied here? Thin people are not normal? I personally find that slightly offensive; the idea that a naturally thin female is not a real woman. It gets a little old hearing everybody singing hallelujah for more “real women” being featured in magazines; are we really spending time applauding people for being comfortable in their own skin but not being aware of health risks? I’m sorry. I wasn’t aware that being an extremely small size made me “unnatural”.

I was happy to start seeing people jump in and comment, as some hit home to me. (I relate to it very much and I think it’s very true)

“I really dislike the implication that thin women are not real. I’m sorry that people don’t want to hear it, but the average American woman is seriously overweight and in denial about it. I don’t think that bringing us images of women with gross stomachs helps bring anyone back to reality.”

“FitSugar posted a wonderful book a while back that entirely changed my thinking on this subject, “The End of Overeating.” It made me realize that many people with weight problems are simply victims of a food industry that makes a profit by getting you hooked on malnutritions, addictive food. Enabling bad behavior does not help a drug addict.”

“I just don’t understand why so many women choose to be overweight and passive about it, emailing each other pictures of a model like this to justify their exercise habits. It’s just not something I can understand.”

Putting a “real” woman in a magazine is like saying, “Hey- we should never strive to be better than who we are, because our whole society views  have shifted, and women with stomachs and higher BMI as the norm now. Let’s rejoice and sing our praises! We no longer have to worry about being healthy because THIS girl is in a MAGAZINE, instead of the ones who get paid to be in the industry!” The healthy BMI range has changed, it’s now higher. That means people like me with a low body mass index at the bottom of the average are now considered “waif thin” and “stick thin”.

I like the comment that this girl left (along with many others that quickly agreed about thin people being chastised for having bodies that weren’t overweight) is because people in general are ignorant about any topic that is genuinely a concern.

“When I was super skinny (and fit), I was put down by so many other women because I didn’t have barely any curves. It was always women who said the nastiest comments to me (implying I was anorexic and OCD). I think if they put me down, they felt better about themselves since I embodied “the skinny magazine” image. Often, the same people who put me down for being too thin, would turn around and make fun of people who were bigger than them.”

“I COMPLETELY disagree with all the hype about plus size models in a very popular magazine being a great direction for them to take now and for the future. Lets be honest, we buy magazines to see those perfect bodies and air brushed faces. Would men and women purchase adult magazine ( maxim, playgirl) if all the people in them were AVERAGE looking? I don’t want make up tips and fashion suggestions from people who look just like me. There is nothing wrong with putting “perfect” looking bodies on a pedestal and applauding those who work out 7 days a week. Yes, the truth of the fact is, most of us don’t have the time to do it, but for those who do KUDOS.”

THEN we get into the nasty comments where people who are overweight take offense at a person of normal (read: thin size) replying to the article. You can really see the ignorance and judgment of people who are pleased that this photo was placed in glamour. One person even said that it seems the thinner people that were commenting have lower self esteem than the heavier people. Ummm no… that is not true. The reason people on the comments are so defensive is because the heavier people had to make some kind of derogatory exaggeration towards skinny girls. Here’s a few.

“I am slightly offended that the editor-in-chief writes “a “plus-size” one by modeling industry standards, though hello, at size 12 she’s actually “normal size”…but I digress.” Hello! If YOU realize that “normal size” looks like this beautiful model, then why do you persist in using abnormally thin models in your magazine? As editor-in-chief, you are in large part responsible for allowing photo spread after photo spread of airbrushed, emaciated, extremely young women onto nearly every page.——-”

“The market is so saturated with distant skinny topmodels that you just don’t feel like buying a beauty magazine anymore. If you add in the crisis depressive/fearful moods you’ll realize that people really had enough of being put down by the media so as to force them in this sort of bulimic need for shopping they cant afford nor really need.”[Note: Sure. Let's blame society for our own issues again. We are all responsible for our own actions. Society does not "force" anyone to go into a "bulimic need for shopping they can't afford". It's cute how you tried to use an eating disorder word in your sentence to tie this together.. but I'm sure another word would have fit in just as well there. The next step is blaming the media and society for America being overweight. OH WAIT!! We already do! One step ahead...]

“Everyone knows that these air-brushed models are unhealthy and their physique has been enhanced and changed with special lighting, photo retouching software and makeup.——”[note: not everyone's physique is changed. Yes, skin is retouched so it is a uniform shade and glows, without blemishes, but last I checked my body was NOT made to look smaller than it was. To say everyone is photoshopped to look that tiny is ignorant. Some people just look that way. Quit trying to make excuses for yourself if you are unhappy with the way you are.]

“Go, Glamour! Hopefully, the fashion industry has finally realized men — real men — want women who look like women, not like 14 year old boys or tarted-up, spoiled LA brats.———”

“Fantastic. i love her already. i have always loved women with “something” around bones. I hate skinny women.”

“This is a TRUE/REAL picture! and I LOVE IT! she looks great and so comfortable with herself! I can’t agree more with the comments on how we can finally see someone with a NORMAL body! Not everyone has all the pleasures like the celebrities to have personal trainers and personal chefs….”[edit: funny, I wasn't aware that I was so thin because I had personal trainers and chefs. Damn, I just thought I was healthy. where are they hiding?]

“lets be HONEST about how this perfection we see is obtained. Between the spray tans, the airbrushing, the professional lighting, the team of stylists and hair people, we regular women of the world don’t stand a chance in hell of measuring up. ” [YES! YOU KNOW WHY?!?!?! BECAUSE THAT'S THE INDUSTRY! It's a JOB. It's no secret that all this happens because a magazine is a BUSINESS. Marketing and advertising is a BUSINESS. BEAUTY is a business.]

So wait… airbrushed models with studio lighting don’t belong in magazines because they are purposely made to look perfect?? They can’t do their job because normal people aren’t included? If someone wanted to feature you in a magazine (for fashion and makeup) and said, “sorry! we don’t want to do studio lighting or makeup. How about you step outside and use this digital camera to take the picture, we’ll feature it!” would you let them? Or would you expect the best work? Working for NASA takes exceptionally talented people. If a person of normal intelligence walked into NASA and started working, would you say- “OH thank GOD. FINALLY! a real person is in here. I was getting sick of all these smart people. Now it’s a fair playing field because we can’t have people more talented than the NORMAL people in the world.”. No. Because the industry calls for a certain level of talent.

I think the reason that this bothers me the most is because there is somewhat of a double standard here. Women are talking about how it’s GREAT that we finally show women who are curvy and “real”, and also glad that those “stick thin” models got out of the way. So, you make yourself feel better, than put down others? Do you REALLY feel better about yourself, or are you just using this picture as an excuse to say you do, when in fact you have some rage towards other people in the back of your mind? This woman could have the same beautiful face and smile, on a smaller frame, and nobody would give her the time of day in a magazine; she would probably be referred to as one of those “stick-thin” models. People would NOT be publicizing this photo to the extent that it has been. Personally, as someone who is naturally very tiny, I take a lot of crap from people who don’t understand what it’s like to not gain weight EVER. People always say it’s a blessing; it’s not. It’s a curse. It’s a curse because stores like Guess stopped carrying anything under a size 3. It’s a curse because American Eagle pushed down their sizes, so now a 0 in their clothes really fits a size 3.I have to actually special order smaller sizes from their website to get anything that fits. Screw you American Eagle.

It’s always okay for  an average size person (or even a person who may be a little heavier) to talk down to people who are naturally tiny and make it seem as if they have some sort of problem.   If a thin person walked around and suggested that a heavier person should exercise more (FOR EXAMPLE! I am not meaning this to imply that people who may be heavier are not exercising and/or healthy. Just generalizing a scenario) they would probably have to walk the gallows [or plank. yarr.] and be called shallow and insensitive. It is not alright for someone to tell a heavier person to lose weight, so why is it okay for anybody to tell a smaller person to gain weight? What on earth is with this annoying double standard?

One other reason this bothers me is because it’s true that the average American is considered to be overweight. Our society as a whole is not very healthy- there’s nothing secret about that. There are video games now that let you workout while staring at the TV. There are even some GYM CLASSES IN SCHOOL that are incorporating this. I understand that it’s a way to get people moving… but really? Using video games? Video games are something that parents have been trying to move their children away from for years now! While I think it’s wonderful that Lizzie is being featured in glamour as a “real and normal” woman, it also makes me worry. I feel as if this is our society’s way of accepting the fact that the majority of Americans are overweight, and allowing us to justify this by saying “thank god, no more skinny women in magazines! Move over because the REAL women are hopefully going to be featured!”. This woman is 20 years old. I had originally assumed she was towards 30. Weight held around the stomach is one of the most DANGEROUS areas to hold weight- it’s a medical fact. I took this from the Glamour article. THAT’S RIGHT. THE MAGAZINE PUT THIS IN THEMSELVES.-

“The emails were filled with such joy–joy at seeing a woman’s body with all the curves and quirks and rolls found in nature. (Raising a question: With all the six-packs out there, do you even know what a normal belly looks like anymore–other than the one you see in the mirror?)”

Umm yes, we do know actually. Our normal stomachs don’t look like the one in the featured picture- does that make us any less real? Maybe people who carry more weight around their stomach should stop looking at themselves as the normal and consider themselves a health risk. So really, glamour? Would you EVER write something like that about an overweight person? Would you say, “Raising a question: With all the belly fat out there, do you even know what a normal belly looks like anymore?” No. Because that would be HORRIBLE and glamour would be chastised, as well as probably SUED. So why is it okay for the media to start sitting around and nitpicking on thin people? Especially magazines that include DIET TIPS as well as workout tips on how to get thinner? Contradictory much? It’s almost like society is just trying to make themselves feel better- to justify the fact that our society IS getting more obese. Is this what you hope to do by featuring this woman in your magazine? Now, I’m going to say once again, SHE IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. If you take anything away from this post, understand that I think it’s amazing that she has so much confidence. But also think to yourself, do you want to open magazines and see this?

Of course then, there are all the comments from readers saying “OH! I’m definiately a subscriber NOW! Please feature more women like this!” and, “I never liked glamour because of the unrealistic models, I am now going to buy more issues.” Okay so…. marketing ploy maybe?

“You just sold yourself a subscription. I’ll take a magazine that actually has the guts to put real women in there instead of spoon feeding us constant images that are unreal for most American women. People say that aspirational images sell. I say that is a load of garbage when it comes to this issue.”

There’s been other plus sized magazines that featured “real” women, and they ended up falling flat on their faces, or discretely slinking back into the background. Why? Sex sells. Beautiful “unrealistic model-y” women sell. People do not want to open magazines (well the majority of us anyway) and see this everyday; it takes away from the fantasy of the magazine.

Maybe I’m going overboard with this, but I personally don’t care. I don’t mind being the girl that cries wolf towards a marketing ploy by Glamour. Seems like everybody is too afraid to remark on this article about what this represents. I’m not.

Other comments included:

“When my daughters are older I hope they grow up and learn healthy ways to live but at the same time hope they find a man that is accepting of bigger ladies like my father and I.”

Yes, that’s very sweet, but by hoping this for your child, you’re pretty much saying you don’t want to put in an effort to raise your child in a healthy way. Is this the laissez-faire attitude we want our children to grow up with? Don’t try to better your health and eating habits- it’s okay- because America accepts unhealthiness as a standard now? I’m not saying we have to force our children to be a certain weight. THAT’S WRONG! We should love our children and take them as they are, and NEVER encourage any kind of eating disorder, HOWEVER, does that mean we can’t take steps to educate and encourage healthy eating habits? Include them in a healthy lifestyle? Take our children out hiking? Or to play in the park on the weekends? Or should we just give them video games to workout with so that our hands are clean of them? We need to change our attitudes.

And to end this… the whole idea behind the modeling industry is that the girls in there are exceptionally beautiful- there is SOMETHING about them that makes them stand out, which is why it’s so hard to break into the industry. So for everyone to immediately jump in and start saying “thank god we have REAL women” is just plain ignorant. Stop blaming industries for our short comings. If we aren’t happy with ourselves, there’s no need to blame people in shape and make them feel as if they aliens. Stop looking through magazines and saying “UGH! Stupid fake hooker with her airbrushed tan and studio lighting! How do they expect me to look like this!” and wisen up! Open your eyes! Feel better about yourself, and encourage other people to feel better about themselves- but don’t do that by being captain obvious.

A few afflictions

First- to read the rest of this post, click the title. I’m working on getting it to display the whole thing on the front page, but to no avail. So far. I don’t have anything interesting to write about yet, but I feel guilty cause I haven’t put up anything in a few days. Well, anything interesting or worth while. I promise in another day or two I’ll come up with some amazing post that is just as, if not more, audacious than my “time” post. I haven’t been able to read new scientist or stalk cnn/other websites because… let me count the ways:

  1. Finance is consuming my soul. I’ve never seen so many ratios in my life. I would much rather have law consume my soul than finance, but such is life at the moment.
  2. Our house is haunted. That’s right. Toothbrushes starting to vibrate on their own, even after we walk up to it and turn it off. We finally took the batteries out. Garage door on the inside opening by itself and the door chime going off. We come home, after DISTINCTLY closing the office door (I know this because it makes a huge slam for some reason, and I made some comment about it because it made me sound like a badass. Lol) and it was cracked open when we got home. The chime for the garage door going off and it DIDN’T open. It’s getting tricky now. Ummm… some plastic bag fiasco, but I don’t know what I attribute that to. So yeah.
  3. Kickboxing has officially kicked my ass, because I’m the only crazy person who takes it 3 times in the span of 5 days. My butt hurts. My calves hurt. My shoulders hurt (because I’m the only girl it seems who does real push-ups and not those gay little knee-ups). More so because my leg is still sore from crazy pony carting accident. It’s bruised. I’m whiny. I’m going to go cry now.
  4. Getting up early for class is taking its toll on me. I am soooo not a morning person, and I really need to be. Night time is for playing! Doesn’t college know that!?
  5. I can’t stalk CNN because my management professor is too busy talking about Degree Deodorant, crack cocaine, cheese puffs, gold-bond (and YES! It was for THAT reason), owning children, and various other random and completely unrelated (yet TOTALLY related) things.
  6. Having a house is a lot of work! We eat much more than I actually realized. The dishes are out of control and I may just keep the dishwasher on permanent cycle.

But most importantly… the ultimate reason that I cannot, at this very moment, create an intriguing, interesting, humorous and/or smarty-pants post is because… there is delicious, succulent, amazing, tasty, scrumptious, mouth-watering, delectable, exquisite, and last but not least.. HEAVENLY… bacon wrapped fillet in the oven. I think I’ll have a serious breakdown if I accidentally burn them because OMG THEY LOOK SO YUMMY! I would also like to apologize if this post made no sense at all. Which is should of.. and if it didn’t then I think that’s more your problem than mine… just kidding. But seriously. I’ve had two coffees, two emergen-c energy booster drinks, and a banana vanilla smoothie with lots of espresso in it. I am pretty wired… you’re lucky you aren’t here. I’m also lucky that shane is putting up with my bouncy-ness.

That is all. Check back in a few days after Finance’s first week exam has released me from its icy grip. BYE! :)

First presidential debate; John Mccain is suspending his campaign… for a pie eating contest.

I’m not sure how many of you were watching the first presidential debate tonight in Mississippi between Obama and Mccain, but I was, because the boy and I love politics. We watched it in HD (because we just discovered that CNN has an HD channel) and WOW..  I don’t ever want to be filmed with an HD camera. They are so powerful that they completely transformed the reporters from what we were used to seeing them as, before our very eyes. Crazy. You can see every single blemish on their faces, along with makeup. Haha. I would prefer if the whole world couldn’t see my every pore, thanks. Also, Anderson Cooper is alarmingly ghostly looking on HD.

The debate was interesting, first of all, because I was somewhat surprised that Mccain actually did very well. Now, I may not like Mccain or any of his views on political issues, BUT I must concede that he did a very good job debating. Kudos to him. I’ve watching a ton of interviews with him and sometimes he seems like he’s struggling to grasp answers for the reporters. He did not do that in this debate, and he kept a fairly cool head. Obama was just as I expected, albeit he did seem to get a little frustrated when Mccain kept going on tangents about things. He had tried to interrupt a lot but Mccain just kept talking.

You can find the complete debate transcript here: First Presidential Debate.

They had started the debate asking “where do you stand on the financial recovery plan?” There was quite some teeth pulling here, each candidate had seemed to stretch out the answer and not completely take one firm stance. They left it pretty much open.

Obama had stated :

“No. 1, we’ve got to make sure that we’ve got oversight over this whole process; $700 billion, potentially, is a lot of money.

No. 2, we’ve got to make sure that taxpayers, when they are putting their money at risk, have the possibility of getting that money back and gains, if the market — and when the market returns.

No. 3, we’ve got to make sure that none of that money is going to pad CEO bank accounts or to promote golden parachutes.

And, No. 4, we’ve got to make sure that we’re helping homeowners, because the root problem here has to do with the foreclosures that are taking place all across the country.”

Mccain had ended his answer with this:

“But I want to emphasize one point to all Americans tonight. This isn’t the beginning of the end of this crisis. This is the end of the beginning, if we come out with a package that will keep these institutions stable.

And we’ve got a lot of work to do. And we’ve got to create jobs. And one of the areas, of course, is to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.”

No clear answer from either, just a synopsis of what they both have seen, and what they wanted to see in the future.

Then, the host clearly tried to turn them on each other and make them vicious. He kept saying “Do you disagree??? If you do, say it directly to him! TELL HIM!” Maybe not with that much vigor, but you get the idea. Then they went on to talk about what each candidate thought was the fundamental difference between their plans. Mccain’s big point was that the government suffers from sever overspending; which is true.

” Well, the first thing we have to do is get spending under control in Washington. It’s completely out of control. It’s gone — we have now presided over the largest increase in the size of government since the Great Society.”

What he didn’t say (that Obama nicely pointed out) was

“Senator McCain is proposing — and this is a fundamental difference between us — $300 billion in tax cuts to some of the wealthiest corporations and individuals in the country, $300 billion.

Now, $18 billion is important; $300 billion is really important.

And in his tax plan, you would have CEOs of Fortune 500 companies getting an average of $700,000 in reduced taxes, while leaving 100 million Americans out.

So my attitude is, we’ve got to grow the economy from the bottom up. What I’ve called for is a tax cut for 95 percent of working families, 95 percent.”

So, for everybody who seems to assume that Obama plans on raising taxes and Mccain plans to lower taxes, think again. Do you research. Mccain will cut taxes but only for large corporations and businesses. Obama plans to cut taxes for 95% of working families, which are the ones who need the tax breaks more. To be more clear, the only people taxed more will be ones who make over $250,000.

Mccain had then rebutted:

“Now, Senator Obama didn’t mention that, along with his tax cuts, he is also proposing some $800 billion in new spending on new programs.”

That is also TRUE, except if you understand how the economy works, you will understand why this isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Spending on new programs that is. Our economy is based on our education and ability to be innovative. Our minds have to be constantly challenged and we need outlets to build these ideas, or foundations to help us form them in the first place. If Mccain is all about free market (which he is- and so am I. That is probably the only thing I disagree with Obama on) he should understand that having new programs to stimulate the economy is a positive thing. The economy is directly correlated to the consumer’s confidence. When confidence level falls, spending and borrowing falls. When spending and borrowing falls, businesses lose money. When businesses lose money,  they start to lay off workers and stop borrowing as much. When the businesses AND consumers stop attempting to borrow, then the banks start trying to push out subprime loans. Then, deflation occurs, interest rates rise, and people can’t pay back said loans that were given to them wrongfully in the first place. TA DA! Which goes full circle back to consumers not spending money and being in the hole.

The free market approach in economics says that the economy will always correct itself when it is left to its own means. Which has been a tried and true path before. The little recessions would always correct themselves; its the way of the market. The problem with what is happening now is that this is reminiscent of the great depression. If you pull up information about the great depression and read about the downward spiral, you will see how the market had plummeted initially after cheap credit was repeatedly given out, which essentially DID help in the short term, but what a killer in the long term.

You can’t project just short term benefits in the economy. There is always a long lasting effect that is often overlooked. So after all this credit was given out and the economy picked itself back up, things were good for a while. Then deflation occurred and everybody who has these massive debts could not pay monthly and were starting to default on their loans. When this occurred, consumer spending was cut drastically, which prevented the spawning of new products, or even a need for the preexisting products people needed to live their every day lives. Businesses failed; layoffs occurred. THEN when THIS occurred, the banks began to tighten up their loan systems, which essentially spirals into a vicious circle. Point blank: People and businesses had no money. The bottom of the market fell out. You know the phrase “history repeats itself”? Well I’m a total believer in that, especially when the feds don’t notice the tell tale signs but everyone else does.

So back to present day: Does this sound familiar? Isn’t this exactly what has been going on in the Bush administration that every body seemed to turn a blind eye to?! Obama had warned in the previous year about this possibly happening, and nobody did anything to improve it. There were still subprime mortgages being handed out to people who couldn’t even afford a car, let alone a house. In retrospect, we did this to ourselves. I am a total advocate for free market, but I think when we’re so far down like this, the government should intervene and help. The government is essentially here for the people, the people aren’t here for the government. It’s their duty to keep us safe and step in when need be, but not breathe down our necks dealing out regulations like we’re playing Go Fish. Wall street wouldn’t be such a fantastic thing if it had 43294 zillion regulations saying they can’t do this, or they HAVE to do that. Controlling investors is a no no.

What was the solution last year? The miraculous stimulus check. Which I did not get because I was a student and didn’t work the year before. Now, I can tell you, if I got that stimulus check, I would have went out shopping or bought something glamorous.

The whole plan of the stimulus check/rebate was because they wanted people to spend the money frivolously; such as on a new TV or clothes. That would stimulate the economy and ultimately would have prevented us from being in the recession that we are in now. That didn’t happen. What DID happen was that people spent the money on necessities such as paying back bills and putting money onto their mortgages. This did not help in the way it was expected. That’s why our confidence is still low. This was a good move on the part of the government, but they should have known that when families are stressed for money, the last thing they are going to do is go out and buy and new boat so that they can eat ramen noodles out of the kitchen, with their brand spankin new boat STILL docked because they can’t afford gas to explore anywhere.

ANYWAYS! Now that I’ve lectured you about the economy, let’s move on. The next lead question was:

“As president, as a result of whatever financial rescue plan comes about and the billion, $700 billion, whatever it is it’s going to cost, what are you going to have to give up, in terms of the priorities that you would bring as president of the United States, as a result of having to pay for the financial rescue plan?”

Summed up, Obama had said,

“We have to have energy independence, so I’ve put forward a plan to make sure that, in 10 years’ time, we have freed ourselves from dependence on Middle Eastern oil by increasing production at home, but most importantly by starting to invest in alternative energy, solar, wind, biodiesel, making sure that we’re developing the fuel-efficient cars of the future right here in the United States, in Ohio and Michigan, instead of Japan and South Korea.

We have to fix our health care system, which is putting an enormous burden on families. Just — a report just came out that the average deductible went up 30 percent on American families.

The third thing we have to do is we’ve got to make sure that we’re competing in education. We’ve got to invest in science and technology. China had a space launch and a space walk. We’ve got to make sure that our children are keeping pace in math and in science.”

Mccain had said,

“The point — the point is — the point is, we need to examine every agency of government.

First of all, by the way, I’d eliminate ethanol subsidies. I oppose ethanol subsidies.

I think that we have to return — particularly in defense spending, which is the largest part of our appropriations — we have to do away with cost-plus contracts. We now have defense systems that the costs are completely out of control.

We tried to build a little ship called the Littoral Combat Ship that was supposed to cost $140 million, ended up costing $400 million, and we still haven’t done it.

So we need to have fixed-cost contracts. We need very badly to understand that defense spending is very important and vital, particularly in the new challenges we face in the world, but we have to get a lot of the cost overruns under control.

I know how to do that.”

So after all this, they pretty much kept going over what they have previously said, interjecting new random thoughts in between. All in all, over economic issues, they had held their own ground and stuck with their own regime. The second half of the debate went to Foreign Policy. It had boiled down to Mccain stating that we can’t let up with our silent treatment.

“What Senator Obama doesn’t seem to understand that if without precondition you sit down across the table from someone who has called Israel a “stinking corpse,” and wants to destroy that country and wipe it off the map, you legitimize those comments.

This is dangerous. It isn’t just naive; it’s dangerous. And so we just have a fundamental difference of opinion.”

I disagree with this statement. Playing the whole “silent treatment” game is what 5 year olds do. Diplomacy involves hearing both sides and cooperating. Sitting down to talk to foreign diplomats will not harm the US in any way at all. If anything it will strengthen us because other countries will finally see that we aren’t the supposed arrogant snots that they think we are. They will realize that we are actually willing to fix problems that are occurring as a result of wrong from both sides. Part of the reason that I think the middle east has issues with us is because we put on this facade of being better than everyone and being in control. Vulnerability isn’t always a bad thing, and maybe seeing that we do indeed have some vulnerability will remind them that we are just the same as them, and are willing to work on something that will benefit everyone. Wars start from misconceptions.

Larry King sat down with Ahmadinejad the other day, and had a very intelligent and informative conversation with him. Ahmadinejad answered his questions and explained why he feels the way he does on certain issues. He stated that this whole feud was pretty much one sided; that America was causing it and Iran didn’t want any of it. Nuclear bombs defy their religion and they had their nuclear plans looked over and inspected more than any other country in the world. He said that viewing them as a threat was silly, and America has a one sided view on everything, when we’re the ones that other countries are beginning to frown upon and wonder about. Did you see him try to jump across the table and strangle Larry King? Did you hear him utter any obscure threats towards the American People? Did you see his temper flare once? Did you see him dodge any questions and act shady? No. They sat down, person to person, and discussed. It’s really not out of the president’s grasp to do that, and for Mccain to say that shouldn’t happen could very well be one of the things that is making world peace elusive. It’s narrow views such as Mccain’s which starts to blind side everyone who listens to him.

Mccain was a little stronger in the foreign policy section of the debate, obviously because he has spent more time overseas. I’m also sure you’ve heard (many MANY times) that he was a prisoner of war and blah blah blah. (Which does not mean he will make a good president by the way. They are not correlated. Just because you can fight a war doesn’t mean you can lead a country). Mccain stated that he wants to keep on fighting the way, and not back down, while Obama said we are misallocating our soldiers, and that Al Qaeda is the biggest threat. We are totally not on top of that by the way. They’re definitely getting the best of the situation because America is just one big dumbass.

Mccain seems to think that we are winning in Iraq,

“I’m afraid Senator Obama doesn’t understand the difference between a tactic and a strategy. But the important — I’d like to tell you, two Fourths of July ago I was in Baghdad. General Petraeus invited Senator Lindsey Graham and me to attend a ceremony where 688 brave young Americans, whose enlistment had expired, were reenlisting to stay and fight for Iraqi freedom and American freedom.

I was honored to be there. I was honored to speak to those troops. And you know, afterwards, we spent a lot of time with them. And you know what they said to us? They said, let us win. They said, let us win. We don’t want our kids coming back here.

And this strategy, and this general, they are winning. Senator Obama refuses to acknowledge that we are winning in Iraq.”

Considering the body count of this war, I doubt we’re winning. What conclusions have we reached by being over there, other than that we need to pull out before we lose all our soldiers? Have we come to any solution? Have we come any closer to finding Bin Ladin? Nix, no and nay.

One thing the news was picking on was their different debate styles. Mccain was being viewed as stronger because he talked down to Obama, saying “You don’t understand. You don’t get it” over and over.

“I’m afraid Senator Obama doesn’t understand the difference between a tactic and a strategy.”

“I don’t think that Senator Obama understands that there was a failed state in Pakistan when Musharraf came to power”

“Senator Obama doesn’t seem to understand there is a connected between the two.”

“He doesn’t understand that Russia committed serious aggression against Georgia.”

“Senator Obama still doesn’t quite understand — or doesn’t get it — that if we fail in Iraq, it encourages al Qaeda. They would establish a base in Iraq.”

etc, etc, so on and so forth. There are way too many to put in there. Obama had a different debate style. Rather than talk down to Mccain, he would pick out a point that he had agreed with, then proceed to diffuse the rest of the argument by bringing up counter points. That’s the way debates are supposed to be constructed. You agree, then you disagree and diffuse. You don’t just attack the other candidate. I do agree that it gave Mccain this aura of being “stronger” to some, because he was acting with a superiority complex, but I think that Obama was trying to keep things on more casual terms and not make it seem as if there was a dividing line between the parties. He was playing the right cards.

“No, actually, I think Senator McCain and I agree for the most part on these issues. Obviously, I disagree with this notion that somehow we did not forcefully object to Russians going into Georgia.”

I started this blog promising myself that I would attempt to write this objectively, but then I thought if somebody wanted objective, they could go watch the news. Politics is something I have a definite view on. Like I said before though, while I [obviously] am for Obama, I consider myself an independent. John Mccain did a great job in this debate, somebody should give him a cookie. It was a pleasant surprise and definitely made it more interesting. I can’t wait for the Biden/Palin debate, because both of those candidates are little sparky fireballs.

What I want people to take away from this blog is one important message:

DO YOUR RESEARCH ON EACH CANDIDATE! Don’t just catch the news every now and then (because the news puts their own spin and ideas on what’s going on) and CERTAINLY don’t just vote for one or the other because your family or friends are. Don’t say that you know what’s going on with each candidate because you catch a campaign commercial or two, and watch the news once every two weeks. I’ve been following this campaign daily since practically day one, so I know how the media can spin things. Do you own research and keep informed… the RIGHT way.

TAX BREAKDOWN

PICK EACH AND COMPARE SIDE BY SIDE

Don’t lead this country down the wrong path because of stubbornness or ignorance. The best way to make the right decision is to be informed. I can’t stress this enough. Go back and read the debate from the link I sent you. Get a clear picture.

On a completely unrelated note, I’m working with Fancy again! She finally had her teeth floated so she’s not grumpy anymore and ready to train. I went over yesterday and my thighs and calves are KILLING me. She’s still stiff going towards the left side, so every time we ride into a corner I have to use my inside leg to bend her around it. Very sore. Ow. BUT! She did amazingly well and I’m happy that she’s rideable again. I almost acquired her as my own horse haha because Julie might be getting another one that she really fell in love with, and needed somebody to take fancy. Since I’ve been riding fancy for the past year she offered her to me, but I don’t have the money to board her down here. I’m a broke college student, and the new house doesn’t have land where I can keep her. I had the luxury of my parents helping my board my horses in NY, but now that I’m older I have to find a pay to pay on my own. Oh well. The time will come when I’m financially stable and working to have a horse again.

I have another shoot coming up. I’m looking forward to it. We’re doing it down by Rollins college, which is very Saratoga like, and has cobble stone streets. So pretty.

Sim Problem on Iphone & an easy fix.

So pretty much, I almost just cried and spazzed out.

I was carrying a bunch of water bottles out of the bedroom (because we compile them like it’s our job) and I had my iphone tucked under my arm. I felt it slipping (and was predicting the fall… always listen to what your gut tells you. I’ve learned this over the past couple of years) and I knew immediately it wouldn’t make it to the kitchen under my arm. I tried to rush somewhere to set down the water bottles but by that time it had freed itself and catapulted onto the kitchen floor. I stared at it for a minute and let me jaw drop (there I go with the “let me jaw drop” pirate speak again. yarrrr.) I have this pink protective case on it (I really wanted a different color but they didn’t have one) and I figured it would have saved its little electronic life. I go to pick it up and it says “No sim installed”. This shocked the hell out of me. Pssssh, some protective case THAT piece of crap is. Anyway, I didn’t know what to do. An iphone is pretty much a little computer so when there’s a malfunction you have to get more technical with it than a regular cell phone. There is also a chance of permanently damaging it, in which case you will have a $500 glorified paperweight. I couldn’t plug it into my computer because I jailbroke it… last time I made that mistake, I-tunes automatically opened and knew it was modified and ended up blacking it out so I couldn’t use it. (by the way- ziphone. excellent jailbreaker. Just make sure you use the installer the right way or else it breaks… that happened to me the first time) which means I can add 3rd party apps on it.. and it also means that AT&T will not honor the warranty. I conveniently found that out AFTER I jailbroke it. So anyways, taking it to AT&T was out of the question. I searched online and found this neat little tip. By the way, I’m sorry if you had to read this whole entry just to fix this problem, because really… it’s practically a two sentence solution. I really did not know you could do this- as far as I knew, the iphone were not openable (is that a word?) yet and you couldn’t mess with the SIM. There’s a little tiny itty bitty dot by the headphone jack. Take a paper clip (or earring, in my case) and push on it. It pops out a neat little tray that holds your SIM. just take it out and put it back in… and voila! Problem solved. I guess that wasn’t just a two sentence solution, but now you know how to fix the problem. OH!! Make sure you turn your iphone off when you do this (hold down the lock button on top as well as the home button on the face of it) and then turn it back on when you’re done.

I also know there were rumors of a 3G iphone being released at WWDC in June and I’m starting to believe it’s true. <http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/28/apple-releases-iphone-beta-sdk-6/> The SIM card inside the iphone (as you will see, if you ever encounter this problem or are just weirdly curious and decide to dissect your phone) is a 3G one. There is also code within the hardware that denotes there is, indeed, a sleeping and hidden 3G setting.

On another note, I took an awesome quick run around the lake today. It sure beats the hell out of when I attempted to run in NY around my neighborhood in the freezing ice cold. I also (possibly) have big news coming up, which I will know tomorrow night. I also had a recent photoshoot which I am eagerly awaiting pictures from. I have a few from when we were just messing around with lighting and the backdrop, and even those looked amazing, so I can’t wait to see how the edited ones come out. I may post them on here, I may not… and I will certainly be giving credit to the photographer. I’ll include his information on here. Toodles :)
